The planet Earth should actually be called planet Ocean. Seventy percent of our planet is covered in oceans, yet we know less about the ocean than we do outer space. We depend on the oceans for our oxygen, weather (El Nino, etc.) food and transportation. Yet, we take the oceans for granted and exploit and pollute them more than any other environment on the planet. In Marine Biology 11, you will learn about oceanography (geography of the oceans), marine organisms and marine technology. We will also discuss environmental issues and the marine economy. Students may also participate in an extended field trip to Bamfield Marine Research Station (optional, with a fee), Vancouver Aquarium and several marine technology centers (submarine and “Newt suit” manufacturing for example). Work experience placements may be arranged for some students in Marine Biology careers, SCUBA lessons (optional, with a fee) leading to certification will also be offered, and diving outings will be organized.
