Advanced Placement
The AP Program is a cooperative educational endeavor between secondary schools, colleges and universities. It allows high school students to undertake college-level academic learning in AP courses, and gives them the opportunity to show that they have mastered the advanced material by taking AP exams. Students can receive credit, advanced placement, or both from thousands of colleges and universities that participate in the Advanced Placement Program.
We are pleased to be beginning the process of implementing Advanced Placement courses in the year 2010. At present, we have identified our Grade 10 challenge English and Science classes as two cohorts to begin Pre-AP instruction. As these students progress to Grade 12 they can be offered the opportunity to take both regular English and Biology 12 as well as the AP English 12 and AP Biology 12.
For students, AP can:
- Provide college credits for courses and examinations successfully taken in high school.
- Exempt them from some introductory college courses, thus permitting students to move more quickly into advanced classes.
- Develop, in a high school environment, the study skills and habits they will need in college.
- Bolster their confidence that they can meet college requirements.
